When I returned home that evening I had a carry-out sandwich and a glass of refrigerator white wine. I thought about what I had learned and as I tried to determine what, if anything, was of any significance I remembered a scene from an old movie. A woman who fancied herself a photographer had been taking pictures while on safari in Africa. However, the animals she thought she was photographing were all obscured by the shade from the trees under which they were resting. As she enumerated the animals and flipped through her glossy 8x10 black-and-white photographs, her boyfriend commented that she wasn’t taking pictures of animals at all; she was actually taking pictures of trees. “You only thought you were taking pictures of animals,” he said.

I thought about what I had learned and then wondered if I had learned something quite different than I had intended. I thought I was learning about clients of a wine distributor, about a distributorship with a small staff, limited clientele and a pair of deliverymen who had met violent and completely unexpected and seemingly unrelated deaths. Perhaps I was learning about something else entirely.
